Position
Summary:
The Dorchester County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that serves to protect, preserve, and share local history.
Our mission is to inspire and support research, interpretation, education, and appreciation of the folklore, history, culture, and heritage of Dorchester County, Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay region.
We operate on a historic property within a museum facility, and we provide programs and events to encourage visitors to learn more about our area.
The assistant will learn the ins and outs of operating our museum and Society, working closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees to gain hands-on experience with original artifacts, documents, and resources.
They will develop skills in researching, organizing exhibits, communicating with visitors, formulating outreach strategies, scanning original documents, and similar tasks.
After coordinating with the Director and Trustees, the assistant will have a consistent schedule with assigned tasks to complete, both independently and with others.
This person should be reliable, outgoing, and detail oriented.
Interest in history, familiarity with our work, or familiarity with our museum facility is most preferred.
Duties include a full range of administrative, record keeping, and facility management responsibilities.
The office assistant works closely with Board of Trustee members, Society officers, the Executive Director, and volunteers on pertinent business and operational matters and assists with their activities.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Society President and Executive Director.
However, being able to take the initiative and use good judgement while working independently and with little direct oversight on a day-to-day basis is important.
The office assistant is in daily contact with visitors and is, therefore, a critical reflection of the organization.
Duties:
Administrative:
Process all incoming/outgoing mail and respond to general correspondence and information requests; acknowledge all contributions from individuals and organizations; process membership applications and prepare reports on memberships and number of visitors; maintain files; edit newsletter; and assure that articles, events, and general publicity information is provided to the media in a timely manner.
Representative:
Greet and welcome visitors; conduct tours throughout our museum facility and historic buildings; answer phone calls; provide assistance with research within the library; communicate with other organizations and key individuals on our behalf.
Management:
Maintain regular contact with Board members, the Executive Director, and volunteers; facilitate the flow of information and communications between Executive Officers of the Board and others; supervise the use of the building and grounds by; assist with the arrangement of events; and prepare new exhibit displays or event setups in coordination with the Director, curators, or other parties as needed.
Position Requirements:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Special consideration is given to those with higher education.
Computer literacy and the ability to learn new programs is essential.
Able to go up and down stairs and lift objects up to 50 pounds.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
